Sažetak
Nutrition can be important factor in the development and maintenance of bone mass. It is assumed that vegetarians have lower bone mineral density (BMD) compare to omnivores. Exclusion of animal products in vegetarian diet may be cause because it is assumed that lower vitamin B12 intake results in rise of plasma homocysteine (Hcy) levels and have influence in decrease in bone quality. Women are in focus because their bone quality depends on their life stage. The aim of this research was to determine relationship between Hcy, folate and B12 in vegetarian and omnivorous Croatian women of reproductive age. Subjects are 98 reproductive women with different eating habits (52 omnivore and 46 vegetarians). Goals of this research are to determine is there any significant correlation between BMD and observed biochemical parameters. Expectations are that there is negative correlation between Hcy and BMD, and positive correlation between BMD and observed B vitamins.
