Sažetak
New chemical entities approved in the world in 1995 are discussed. During that year 39 new drugs were approved which, compared to 47 new chemical entities in 1994, is a somewhat lower number. According to our estimate of their significance for drug therapy, new chemical entities have been classified into 4 categories: A - a significant improvement for materia medica, B - a drug with certain advantages over those already approved, C - a "me too" drug (in a generic or clinical sense) and D - drug which should not have been approved. Chickenpox vaccine, a vaccine previously not available, and deferiprone, an orally active iron chelator for treatment of thalassemia, have been ranked as A category. Abciximab, lanreotide, mecasermin, amifostine, liposomal daunorubicin, docetaxel, topiramate, pranlukast and nalmefene have been ranked as B category. The majority of new chemical entities (27) have been ranked as C category, while mucolitic erdosteine, according to our opinion did not deserve to be approved and was therefore ranked as category D. New chemical entities have been classified according to the internationally accepted ATC classification. The greatest number of newly approved drugs (10) was in L category representing immunomodulating agents and drugs for malignant diseases, followed by 6 new chemical entities in J category (drugs for systemic infections) and 5 in C category (cardiovascular drugs).
