Sažetak
On the verge of the third millennium the Split Dalmatian County is burdened with a number of economic, social and other problems. Therefore this paper investigates the essential characteristics of the present situation in the County and the basis for a more comprehensive discussion, which could eventually results in a clearly defined strategy of the medium- and long-term economic development of the County. Evaluation of economic situation and basic development trends starts with an evaluation of the general situation in the Croatian society as a framework for the analysis of the economic conditions in the County. Evaluation of the economic situation and development trends in the County is focused on the dynamic of gross domestic products, international exchange, employment, unemployment, salaries, financial results in 1998, and conditions in the most important economic sectors - manufacturing and tourist industry. The main findings of the analysis confirm the serious difficulties in all the segments of the County economy and give rise to the conclusion that such a situation to a great extent reflect the general conditions and difficulties in Croatian economy as a whole, but also the lack of local development initiatives which could strengthen the competitive advantages of the County economy. Consequently, the basic goals of future development are defined, as well as the framework for the macroeconomic policy and regional development policy, which could accelerate economic recovery and provide stable development of the County.
