Sažetak
Research on relative clauses may enlighten numerous questions that are more general in the field of syntax acquisition (Hakuta, 1981) since they are proven to be the highest achievement in language development (e.g. Kidd and Bavin, 2002). An eye-trecking research was planned to determine complexity factors of processing relative clauses in Croatian, in order to differentiate typically developing children and children with specific language impairment. Prior to the eye-tracking study several pilot behavioural studies were planned in order to prove the relevance of mentioned factors for the processing of relative clauses. This paper presents the results of first two studies. Previous research in other languages has shown the importance of several factors for the processing of relative clauses: type of syntactic shift (subject vs. object relative clauses - overview e.g. Adani 2011), embeddedness (central vs. right branching - e.g. Bates, Devescovi and D’Amico, 1999 ; Kidd and Bavin, 2002 ; Weighall and Altmann, 2010), animacy of the noun (e.g. Mak 2001, 2002, 2004 ; Wu at al. 2011), morphological marking (Meng i Bader, 2000 ; Stavrakaki, 2008), non-canonical word order (e.g. MacDonald and Christiansen 2002 ; Tabor at al. 1997 ; Mitchell at al.1995). Research in Croatian as morphologically rich language with a relatively free word order is most suitable for studying the effects of all of these factors of language processing. Results of two behavioural studies indicate that type of syntactic shift and non-canonical word order play a role in relative clause processing, while central embeddeness shows no effect.
