Sažetak
In the Proceedings of DICSEP3 I tried to show that Rāmāyaṇa 3-6 betrays the structure of a fairy tale according to the scheme of V. Propp, and that in that respect it differs sharply from Rāmāyaṇa 2. The Ayodhyākāṇḍa «could imaginably conclude with the virtuous acceptance of duties by all the main actors, with the expiration of the time of exile, the return of Rāma and Sītā, and with Bharata’s virtuous restoration of the kingdom to Rāma.» However, the scarcity of the coverage of the exile years could have motivated the poetical synthesis of the epic drama (R 2) with what became the epic fairy tale (R 3-6). We even have a materialized indication that this first part once (in the ‘prehistory’ of the Rāmāyaṇa) may have existed in this form alone: the Dasarathajātaka does contain a slighty modified story of the court intrigue and Rāma’s, Lakṣmaṇa’s and Sītā’s exile for twelve years, and of their return and Rāma’s reign, but does not contain any stories about Rāvaṇa or about Hanumant and the monkeys. Albrecht Weber (1870) believed that the Jātaka was composed before the (second part of) the Rāmāyaṇa. Jacobi (1893: 84- 89), on the other hand, argued that the Jātaka presupposes the Rāmāyaṇa of Vālmīki. All his arguments, however, refer to the non-fairy-tale part of the epic. That question shoud be reconsidered in this paper.
