Sažetak
Innovativeness and competitiveness are closely interrelated in contemporary economic research. Innovativeness is seen as a factor that strongly impacts competitiveness on both micro and macro level. In higher developed economies, companies cannot significantly improve their productivity by adopting existing technologies or making incremental improvements in other sectors like those that are less developed. They have to design and develop cutting-edge products and processes to maintain a competitive edge and move toward higher-value-added activities. This progression requires an economic environment that is conductive to innovative activities and supported by both public and private sector (investment in R&D, high quality scientific research institutions, extensive collaboration in research, intellectual property protection, etc.)(WEF, 2012). On national level this increase in competitiveness, although based on industry, is also visible in „soft sectors“– education, employability, work organization, flexibility of work force, etc. Thus it contributes to quality of life improvement and sustainable development (Zjajic, 2007). This paper analyzes the impact of macro (national) innovativeness level on national competitiveness. The paper analyzes two countries: Croatia and Germany. IN WEF methodology Croatia is in a group of countries in transition from stage two (efficiency driven economies) to stage three (innovation driven economies), while Germany is in the stage three. Although the level of most innovativeness and competitiveness as well as development indicators significantly differ between the two countries, the aim is to enable „learning from the better“. The WEF methodology was used for measuring both. Results show the clear correlation between innovativeness and competitiveness and comparison between Croatia and Germany give some implications on possible policy and strategy changes on micro and macro level that can improve the competitiveness of Croatian economy.
