Sažetak
The article discusses the development of tautosyllabic *in, *im, *un and *um in Slavic. One of the sources for these sequences are the Proto-Indo-European syllabic nasals. The relevant data are discussed, including, apart from the traditional examples, žito ‘corn’, the numerals from eleven through nineteen, twenty, thirty and forty and the verbal suffixes -nǫ- and -ny-. It is argued that the default outcome of *in and *un are the nasal vowels *ę and *ǫ. The same outcome is found for *im and *um before a labial occlusive. Before a dental and perhaps a velar, *um apparently becomes *ъ, which can be explained through loss of *m before the occlusive, as was first proposed by Vaillant. The development of tautosyllabic *in, *im, *un and *um was neither affected by the intonation of the syllable containing the diphthong, nor by the position of the stress.
