Sažetak
Data on all patients admitted in 1998 to the Department of Neurology, Osijek University Hospital, were retrospectively analyzed. In a total of 1175 patients, there were 709 (60.34%) stroke patients, which exceeded the percentage recorded the year before by 14.24%. Ischemic stroke was diagnosed in 570 (80.39%) and hemorrhagic stroke in 139 (19.61%) patients. The mean age in stroke patients was 66.20 years, in those with ischemic stroke 67.33 and in those with hemorrhagic stroke 61.58 years. In the cohort of stroke patients there were 360 (50.76%) women and 349 (49.24%) men. The group of patients with ischemic stroke consisted of 290 (50.88%) women and 280 (49.12%) men, and the group of those with hemorrhagic stroke of 70 (50.36%) women and 69 (49.64%) men. The mortality rate was 23.70% in the overall stroke group, and 23.86% in the ischemic stroke group. In the group of patients with hemorrhagic stroke, 23.02% of patients died at our Department, however, aditional 28.06% of patients with this type of stroke were transfered to the Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or to the Departments of Neurosurgery in Osijek and Zagreb, so precise data on the disease outcome in these patients are missing. The number of stroke patients admitted to the Department of Neurology in Osijek has still been on an increase, with high proportion of hemorrhagitc stroke. Inadequate bed capacity, lack of neurologic ICU, inappropriate neuroimaging diagnostics, and impossibility of providing differentiated and complex cerebrovascular neurosurgical interventions are limiting factors for implementation of a modern approach to the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at our Hospital.
