Sažetak
Croatia is a multiethnic society consisted of 97% of the Croats and 3% of minority groups. In some parts of Croatia, especially in Eastern part of the country (Slavonia) there are present multiethnic issues based on relationships between dominant and minority group where the ratio of dominant (Croats) and minor population (Serbs) is bigger in comparison with other regions in the country. The tensions in relationships between these two nations are result of the war events (1991-1994.). One of the most obvious sign of difficulties they have in their coexistence are divided classrooms in schools and kindergartens based on nationality, so in the city of Vukovar, classrooms are divided on Croatian and Serbian departments. Teachers who teach in these schools are divided by nationality as well. This paper is dedicated to the students, teachers and their schools in the city of Vukovar, where live around 55% members of Croatian and 35% of Serbian nationality. The paper will present the study results conducted in one primary school in the city of Vukovar. Participants were 63 seventh grade students and 10 teachers. The majority of the students reported that the ethnicity is the main cause of conflicts in the school. Also, they reported that family’s and community’s values significantly shape their attitudes towards ethnicity and members of other ethnic groups. The majority of our participants considered that the existing organization of education should be changed but they support an idea of separate classes in schools for children of different nationalities. Also, the project “New school” which goal is to develop integrative curriculum for education in multinational and multicultural schools focused on acceptance of diversity, respect, tolerance, inclusiveness, solidarity, equality will be presented.
