Sažetak
The object of the research is the status of German language in the history of the oldest secondary school of Osijek - the Classics-Program Secondary School. The investigation encompasses the period from the beginning of the 18th century until the early 20th century, when the school was abolished. Because of the multicultural and multilingual environment of the town of Osijek, in which German speaking population made a majority of the population in the 19th century, German language enjoyed for a long time a status of the first language in this school inspite of political changes. The changes in its status throughout the history are investigated on the basis of original historical documents saved in the Museum of Slavonia and Baranya in Osijk, the State Archives of Osijek, the Croatian School Museum in Zagreb and the National Library in Zagreb.
