Sažetak
Lately, PVY has been the biggest threat to the flue-cured tobacco production in Croatia. Thus, a breeding program with the aim of developing the flue-cured tobacco hybrids resistant to PVY and acceptable to the tobacco producers and cigarette manufacturers was started at the University of Zagreb in collaboration with the Kombinat Kutjevo, in 1988. The source breeding populations with genetic variability for resistance to PVY, yield and cured leaf quality were formed by hybridisation from parents possessing genetic basis for the traits of interest. Homozygous breeding lines were developed by growing two generations per year and by using a modified pedigree method. The best breeding lines in yield, quality and resistance to PVY were studied for combining ability. The test hybrids were evaluated at two locations, Kutjevo and Virovitica in 1992 and in 1993. Four among the studied hybrids had high and stable yield and cured leaf quality, and were resistant to PVY. Also, cigarette manufacturers consider them acceptable regarding smoking quality.
