Sažetak
Objective. To investigate the effect of a foam- filled contour anatomic pillow (ORTOSAN) on pain, global health and quality of sleep in patients with neck pain. Materials-Methods. This was a single-centre study of patients from the outpatient clinic of the tertiary-care university department. Thirty consecutive patients having predominant neck pain with or without radicular symptoms, lasting 14 days, with pain intensity of 4 (on 0- 10 VAS) were recruited. They need to report preference for side- and/or back sleep position. There were 25 women and 5 men. Mean age was 52.7716.37 years. Subjects were allocated into two equally numbered groups. The patients in Group 1 were given an individually-sized anatomic pillow to use, while patients in Group 2 used their usual pillow. To all subjects therapeutic ultrasound (10 sessions) was applied on paravertebral muscles of the cervico-scapular region and they performed supervised therapeutic exercise, too. Baseline evaluation and after one month included: pain intensity, global patient’s health assessment (GPtA), global examiner’s health assessment (GEA), quality of sleep (all of them on 100-mm VAS) and awakening due to neck stiffness and/or pain in neck/hand (on 5- points Likert’s scale). The significance was set up at P0.05. Results. There were no baseline differences between groups in outcomes of interest, with exception of awakening due to stiffness/pain (Group 1 had worse score ; P=0.043). After one month patients in Group 1 obtained significantly better results in GPtA (P=0.02), GEA (P=0.01), quality of sleep (P=0.04), although not in intensity of pain (P=0.12). Also, awakening due to stiffness/pain was better in Group 1 in comparison to Group 2 (P= 0.04). Conclusion. In our sample of ambulatory middle-aged patients with neck pain contour individually-sized anatomic pillow (ORTOSAN) significantly improved global health (assessed by a patient and an examiner), quality of sleep and reduced awakening due to stiffness/pain.
