Sažetak
Translations of „holy sites“ to Europe is closely connected to the larger concept of spolia, not only in its material sense, but also symbolic and metaphorical. Taking of an object and incorporating it in another setting was a mean of empowering and consecrating a new site. As a survival of classical antiquity practice the use of spolia continued in medieval and modern Europe. Relics are also a form of spolia, a special use of miraculous objects or objects for remembrance. To recreate a copy of a holy site, again, embodies the idea of invocation of the memory of an individual or an act. These activities are meant to create multiple connections with the past and with the invisible in interpretatio christiana. The paper will present short historiography of the subject with special reference to Warburgian and more recent (after 1990) approach to the subject.
