Sažetak
In the past couple of decades linguistic research on the subject of street names has become popular not only among European linguists, but also geographers, political scientists and historians. There are only few published papers on the subject of urban odonyms and street names. However, when we try to analyze the names given to a certain street, we must also take into consideration all aspects of language identity of a nation: structural (typological), genetic (genealogical) and the most interesting when it comes to language – the sociolinguistic aspect. Numerous sociolinguistic theories of the 20th century were based on observing the attitude of speakers towards their mother tongue. The language is observed as a phenomenon with its social role, cultural tradition and unavoidable symbolic reference to the national values. If we want to research the origins of Croatian odonyms, it is essential that we consider all three sociolinguistic parameters (social, cultural and symbolic aspects of the language). After World War II and the post-war industrial revolution, urban areas in the Croatian society have boomed ; the cities were populated and the new streets in big towns (Zagreb, Split, Osijek, Rijeka) were somehow named. It is this paper that will present an overview of how the very streets of the big cities mentioned above got their names and which sociolinguistic aspects were applied when naming them. Motivation and the reasons behind street naming were various, but from the point of view of sociolinguistics, it is possible to determine and calculate which parameter was the most common.
