Sažetak
In the contemporary novel, the plot occasionally develops through the multiple perceptions of place by the character's moving around the urban space. It means that, differently from what it represented in the 19th century Italian novel, the setting becomes as important as the characters ; moreover, it becomes indispensable for the creation and the development of characters. Therefore, in this paper the research focuses on two Italian contemporary novels in which the cityscape of Rome is inseparable from the self ; more precisely, the cityscape is experienced as the memory of the self, or as a part of the process of the self discovery. As a result, in these novels the city of Rome becomes at the same time the public place as well as the private space for the characters. The time and the space are intertwined in the novels analyzed: the past of the city comprises the past of the characters so they tend to discover their former life through the analysis of the contemporary public space in order to understand the present events. Thus the journey across the urban space enables the characters to discover not only the hidden parts of the city but also to analyze some their personality traits as well as to find out some complex and recondite aspects of the past and present self. So while they are actually reconstructing the city through the inspection of the urban environment, the characters forge their own identities. The movement of the characters from one part of the city to another transforms it into the domesticated place which offers the characters an insight into themselves. Hence, in these novels, the cityscape of Rome, in which public and private space are intersecting, is, in fact, represented as the base on which the characters’ personal diaries are constructed. In the analyis we start from Wirth-Nesher, Nemec, Sablić Tomić, and Ileš’s hypotheses regarding the indeterminacy of private and public space in the contemporary novel and the importance of the city artifact in the construction of individual as well as collective memories.
