Sažetak
Croatian popular almanacs printed in the USA and Canada from the last decades of the nineteenth century till now are an expression of the literary life of Croatian immigrants and an indicator of the literary and social conceptions of their editors, publishers and contributors. They are also testimony to the values shared by the majority of Croatian immigrants who read them and accepted them as rare written manifestations of the mother tongue and the culture of the homeland. Almanacs edited by Croatian immigrants in the USA and Canada were for their readership a connection with the homeland and a help in faster integration into American society. These publications were the foundation of Croatian ethnic literature in America, and indirectly, they influenced Croatian literature. Considering that editors and publishers of ethnic almanacs had some influence on the cultural consciousness of immigrants as well as on events at home, their historical importance has been underestimated. One can trace the gradual improvement in the educational level and cultural consciousness of Croatian immigrants in USA and Canada through the types of contributions published in almanacs.
