Sažetak
The unification of South Slavs in the common state for the first time was realized in the 1918. Established as a centralized state dominated by the Serbian dynasty, the first Yugoslavia was permeated with contradictions dominated by the unresolved national question. This was the issue that Yugoslav communists placed in the center of their own political action. Commitment to federalist principles and ethnic equality, allowed the mass support of anti-fascist partisan movement they led during World War II. On this basis they deserved the mass support in the country and the one of the Allied powers, enabling the creation of the second Yugoslavia. After the establishment of communist system, a complex multinational structure of Yugoslavia led to further demands for decentralization of the state and strengthen the power of federal units. The convergence of the republican communist leaderships to the positions of traditional nationalism finally led in the early '90s up to the war and the dramatic breakup of Yugoslavia.
