Sažetak
Introduction The research study of a hood once owned by Bela IV was completed in order to investigate the possibilities and examine the effectiveness of Multislice Computed Tomography (MSCT) and mammography in its use in the inspection of historical artefacts. The item inspected is a hood of a bishop’s cape depicting St. Martin and a beggar, from the Trogir Cathedral located in Trogir, Croatia. Methods To examine the textile material remnants, the study encompassed the use of MSCT, as well as incorporating the use of mammography. Along with these methods, a microbiological analysis was conducted to ensure the safety of researchers prior to the radiological study.
Results The microbiological analysis proved the presence of flora on the artefact, however, none were found to be pathogens. The figure on the textile clearly depicts that of St. Martin mounted on a horse. It was found to contain pearls and gilded filaments, silk and semi-precious stones. The findings, enhanced by digital imaging, generated clearly enriched fine metal embroidery from the hood. Conclusion Due to the value such objects posses in helping to discover and further learn about the past, materials such as paper and textiles are proving essential to the expansion of our knowledge in fields such as history. The use of x-rays can lead to vital information helping to shed light on the manufacturing of the textiles, methods and materials used, at the same time revealing hidden components. This invaluable information can eventually lead to the proper restoration and preservation of such valued artefacts.
