Sažetak
In our paper we wanted to investigate the changes in time allocation and job satisfaction of Croatian academics which have been taken place in our economy and society as a whole. With the end of war in 1995 in Croatia has started period of economy transition. In such a changed circumstances the Law on High Education has been passed in 1996 with changed expectations and requirements for academics. More concern has been given to writing scientific paper as a prerequisite to promotion and further employment at the faculty. This law did not stress scientific research as a vital part of academics work. In order to see how and whether new law has influenced the change of time allocation and job satisfaction of Croatian academics we conducted two researches, one in 1995 and the other in 1999. Also our interest was to see how our findings fits into standards of some other countries in the world. It is obvious that our academics spent much less time on research (26.6 percent) than in other compared regions (36.6 percent), although they would prefer to do much more (31, 13 percent). However, there has been very scarce financing of scientific research in Croatia in the past nine years. On the other side, writing paper is not necessarily connected with the research, but it is more a result of prerequest for promotion of academics and their interest in some specific research. On the other side average time our academics spent on teaching is much higher (46.8 percent) than in the compared part of the world (38.1 percent), although ideal time is lower. General job satisfaction of academics was quite high (68 percent), but on specific part of their job was much lower (50 percent).
