Sažetak
This is a personal view of bone marrow transplantation in Zagreb, from the establishment of the first radiation chimeras in 1961 to the clinical transplantation in 1983. The experimental work began at the Ruđer Bošković Institute, acquired international recognition, and paved the way to the acceptance of allogeneic bone marrow ransplantation by the clinicians. Skilled young hematologists were trained in renowned transplantation centers (Paris, Basel, Seattle). The transplantation unit was established as part of the safeguard measures for the nuclear power plant to be built near Zagreb. Today, the center performs around 20 allogeneic and 25 autotransplants per year, and collaborates with several international cooperative groups. Around 130 scientific articles (experimental as well as clinical) have been published in indexed journals since 1958.
