Sažetak
The paper discusses the relationship between language and identity in 19th century Rijeka within the framework of language policy as defined in normative documents of the period. The normative provisions are set against the actual discursive practices and construction of national identity based on the analysis of newspapers published in Rijeka between 1848 and 1880's. This period has been selected as the time of political and social change in which the Habsburg monarchy was undergoing a transformation from authoritarian to civil constitutional state. Against this background, the paper explores how the status of languages interacted with different group identities and how these identites were produced by the ideological working of discourse
