Sažetak
Although definitional and terminological debates have characterized the evolution of information literacy (IL) from its beginnings, its conceptual core, focused on finding, evaluating and using information, remained quite stable ever since the term was coined. However, the recent years have seen a flood of alternative and competing concepts and terms that supposedly prepare users to cope with intricacies of new social media environments in a much more efficient way than IL does. In this paper the adequacy of the IL concept in preparing users to cope with challenges posed by new information and media environments will be examined and the question whether IL as a concept is still sufficient analyzed. It will be argued that IL definitions reveal a conceptual core centred around finding, evaluating and using/communicating information, all of which stand up to challenges of current information and media–saturated environments. Therefore, the question is not whether IL as a concept should be abandoned, but whether IL practice and research should embrace a more holistic approach to IL dealing with all its aspects, not just with traditional library-focused themes focused on searching for information. The author will plea for embracing a holistic approach to IL, which actually represents a return to the totality of core values and elements of IL. Such a shift will make IL sessions sensitive and responsive to problems caused by new social media environments and therefore represents a prerequisite for IL to remain a meaningful and relevant concept.
