Sažetak
The gem research (glyptics) has been an important part of archaeology for decades, since the gems provide a valuable insight into the Roman society, religion, economy, trade and crafts. In Croatia, the glyptics has received a limited attention. For example, not a single gem collection from Croatian archaeological museums has been entirely published. In the context of glyptics of Roman provinces, Dalmatia stands out with its significant amount of gems. This suggests that a gem workshop may have existed in Salona, the capital of the province of Dalmatia. A large number of gems housed in the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb has been discovered precisely in Dalmatia. Their thorough analysis is expected to widen the iconographic repertoire of the Dalmatian glyptics. The majority of other gems from the Zagreb collection originates from various sites of the Roman province of Pannonia. Of the latter group, the gems from Siscia are particularly interesting, and have not been analyzed until present.
