Sažetak
The limestone sarcophagus of Pontius Lupus (1st half of the 3rd c.), the only piece of architectonic design from Siscia, displays a conventional motif of two Erotes on the front, while its sides are each occupied by a quite unique iconographic programme: a Dioscurus wearing a starred pileus and a fastened cloak, leading a horse by the reins with one hand and lifting up a standard (vexillum) in the other. The architectural setting of the front comprises two arched triple-band niches, which rest on fluted and scaled pilasters featuring simply (and similarly) shaped bases and capitals. The sarcophagus of Pontius Lupus is made of limestone and thus undeniably produced locally, so it remains to trace the origin of its structural type. It is argued in this paper that the most likely origin of the piece in question should be looked for in the North-Italian regions of Aquileia-Veneto and/or Ravenna, with possible indirect influences of the City of Rom’s workshops.
