Sažetak
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease characterised by reversible bronhospasm, airway hyperresponsiveness and airway inflammation. Growing evidence suggest that eosinophils play an important role as proinflammatory cells in asthma, among others, by releasing toxic cationic protein (ECP). Increased serum ECP levels thereby reflect increased eosinophilic activity. Serum ECP level depends on the number of eosinophils, the content of ECP in eosinophils and on the propensity of eosinophils to release their ECP. Aim of the study was to determine the relationship between serum ECP levels with total eosinophil counts in peripheral blood in patients with acute Asthma exacerbation, and in healthy population in different age groups.
Weve measured serum ECP levels and total eosinophil count in 40 asthmatic children during their acute exacerbation and in 40 controll healthy children. We found statistically significant difference in serum ECP levels and blood eosinophil count between asthmatic and non-asthmatic children. ECP levels showed a highly significant correlation with blood eosinophil counts, but serum ECP proves to be more specific marker than blood eosinophils count. We conclud that serum ECP level reflects the clinical state of asthmatic patients and may be used as a valuable marker of inflammatory process in the airways of asthmatic patients.
