Sažetak
Environmental issues are becoming an increasingly important element of economic development in the global community. Climate change, biodiversity conservation, energy security and efficiency, regulating the international trade of hazardous waste, human security and ecological security have recently gained the status of being global imperatives, with direct implications on the economy, development and international relations. The key change in the last decade was the transition from environmental management by governments to green development and human security by multiple actors. Today, global environmental policy surpasses the classical theories of international relations and environmental policy. It has entered the interdisciplinary field of research that is development and the economy. This trend is manifested in two ways: as a threat and as an opportunity. On the one hand, the introduction of increasingly demanding environmental standards and goals result in high costs for businesses and can cause uncompetitiveness for international actors, but nevertheless it is still desirable for local/national economic growth. On the other hand, a business that is successfully restructured in line with green development platforms becomes more resourceful and has improved market efficiency, as well as more internationally competitive. Increased demand for environmentally friendly products and rapidly growing new green markets create novel "globally acceptable" green investments and business opportunities. Realizing that today's decisions about production, consumption and the environment can limit or completely preclude the survival of living systems globally forces us to consider the ecological security of future generations. When, how and how well governments will cooperate in addressing the new challenges of development and nature conservation are the issues on which the survival of the planet depends.
