Sažetak
Jordan is currently producing almost all of its electrical energy from imported fossil fuels, mostly natural gas. With an ever increasing demand for electricity due to a steady rise in population and GDP and a constant increase of the fuel prices, Jordan’s energy bill is becoming an ever larger problem with each passing year. A possible solution for this issue is the implementation of renewable energy sources in the form of wind and solar power, which Jordan has in abundance. A problem with a wide spread implementation of renewables is the intermittent nature of their operation. Wind and solar power are dependent on atmospheric conditions and thus cannot be fully controlled. This can lead to problems with the production of critical excess of electricity at times of low demand and high production. This problem can be addressed with the use of energy storage technologies. Unfortunately, such technologies are still very expensive. This paper presents the influence of the penetration of wind and solar power technologies and the use of pumped hydro storage on the critical excess of electricity production, CO2 emissions, total annual cost of the system and the consumption of fuel in Jordan’s current energy system. Multiple scenarios were created with different installed capacities of wind power, solar power and pumped hydro storage plants with different storage capacities. The results of the model will show that it can be both economically and environmentally beneficial to implement renewable energy and energy storage in Jordan. The system is simulated by using the EnergyPLAN computer model.
