Sažetak
This publication is a review of the studies performed in the republic of Croatia in the field of environmental exposure assessment and epidemiology. The work was originally initiated within the project "Environmental Epidemiology and Development of Environmental Health Strategies for Central and Eastern Europe", which was sponsored by the US Environmental Protection Agency. As Croatia was a part of former Yugoslavia before it obtained independence and sovereignity, data from relevant studies carried out in other parts of former Yugoslavia between 1980 and 1991, presented at joint scientific meetings or from the joint projects have also been included. A few studies performed before 1980 have also found place here. This relates to the studies which initiated some new specific research problems that were elaborated further in the period covered by the review. Since 1991, when Croatia became independent state, only the investigations carried out in Croatia have been presented. In the case of ionising radiation during the whole period covered by the review only the studies pertaining to Croatia have been considered. Papers published in scientific journals have been given special attention but those from national journals written in local languages have had priority. Results of investigations reported at local scientific meetings and selected unpublished reports have also been reviewed. Summaries of relevant dissertations (PhD and MSc theses) have also found their place here. Selection of the studies was not always based on strict scientific criteria. Studies dealing with interesting local environmental exposures and health issues, even if they did not fully meet all the criteria necessary for inclusion in the review, have also been considered.
