Sažetak
Background: High adherence to the traditional Mediterranean dietary pattern is associated with a lower prevalence of obesity. However, a growing body of evidence implies no superiority of a single dietary strategy in terms of weight reduction. Objective: The study aimed to explore the effect of Mediterranean diet (MD) and Standard hypolipemic diet (SHD) on weight reduction in obese patients. Methods: Using a prospective, single-blind, parallel design patients from the outpatient Clinic of the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism disorders at the Dubrava University Hospital were randomly assigned to either MD or SHD. Body weight (BW) and waist circumference (WC) were obtained at the baseline, and following 7 days, 1, 3, 6 and 12 months of the dietary program. During the first week both groups received counselling and education by dieticians, clinical pharmacists and endocrinologists. Results were expressed as number of participants (n), mean ± SD, and significant at P<0.05. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 20.0 (SPSS Inc, Chicago, III). Results: Eighty-four (67.7%) out of 124 randomized patients completed the 12-month program (Table 1). Following 1-year dietary intervention, both groups had a significant decrease in BW, body mass index (BMI) and WC. Mean decrease in BW, BMI and WC for the MD group was: 7, 35 kg (p<0.001), 2, 55 kg/m2 (p<0.001) and 7, 00 cm (p<0.001), respectively, and for the SHD group these values were: 5, 98 kg (p<0.001), 2, 18 kg/m2 (p<0.001) and 5, 65 cm (p<0.001), respectively (Figure 1). Weight reduction from week 0 to 1 year was not significantly different between MD and SHD (P=0.486) (Table 2). Number of patients who accomplished a target decrease of more than 7, 5 % of the initial BW, was similar for MD and SHD groups, 18, 2 % and 18, 9 %, respectively. During the first 6 months of the program patients were more successful (Figure 2) ; 33, 3 % of participants in MD group and 39, 6 % in SHD group accomplished target decrease of more than 7, 5 % of the initial BW. Conclusions: Both dietary interventions showed beneficial effect on weight reduction with no significant difference between them. The comparison between 6- and 12-month results implies that there is a need for better management of a long term weight reduction program.
