The paper briefly considers three separate aspects of the non-linear finite element method, in which particular care must be taken in relation to the adopted discretisation. In relation to statics, we discuss (i) the objectivity of strain measures in finite element implementations of geometrically exact 3D beam theory In relation to dynamics, we discuss (ii) energy and momentum conserving algorithms for continua, beams and shells (iii) the introduction of physical and numerical damping
