Sažetak
On the Adriatic coast in the town of Ston, near Dubrovnik, Romanesque church of St. Michael was built on the hill peak overlooking town and salt pans. It is a single nave church, built by rough stones with inserting pieces of travertine and brick. Interior is richly articulated by arches, pilasters and niches with remains of fresco painting. Exterior wall surfaces are articulated with shallow arches. Roof was covered with stone slabs. On the outer wall surfaces the original plaster is not preserved, except in material compounds of joints. Inside, the original plaster is preserved along with the fragmentary wall paintings. The church was restored several times, but in the previous restorations, incompatible materials were used which intensified the harmful effects of salts that entered the new materials, as well as original. Extensive investigations by Croatian Conservation Institute were carried out for the purpose of desalinization of walls and wall paintings. Quantitative chemical analysis of anions showed presence of chlorides (Cl-) in concentration between 0, 19 and 0, 77%. Nitrates (NO3-) were determined in concentrations between 0, 25 and 0, 63%. On most places sulphates were determined in traces or not present at all. Traces of sulphates (SO42-) were proven to be gypsum. According to these results for desalinization method of walls sacrificial mortar was selected. Sacrificial mortar was changed every six months, and it showed slow decline of salt anions. On wall paintings which were in previous restoration work coated with Paraloid B72 desalinization procedures still have to be applied if coating layer will be successfully removed. Monitoring of microclimate parameters showed anomaly in relative humidity in winter period when with increase of temperature increase of relative humidity of air also increased. This was elaborated with very often cyclonal incalescence with very high relative and absolute air humidity.
