Sažetak
Croatia, with a population of 4,700,344 in 1991, covers an area of 56,542 square meters. The country has three main physiographic regions: the Mediterranean or Adriatic region to the west, the mountain region in the centre, and Pannonian region in the east. The mountain area makes an important contribution to Croatian agriculture. This region is the smalles and the least populated, covering only 13,99 per cent of national area. It consist of a relatively high karst region with somewhat more elevated Gorski Kotar to the northwest and Lika to southwest. Nestled in the mountains are karst fields and valleys, with an average altitude of 500-700 m. The northeastern limestone plateau descends in terraces to the Pannonian region. Gorski Kotar is covered by snow for more than 100 days each year and ice remains in some caves and sinkholes even in summer. Forests cover 51,66per cent of the mountain region. The pastures (24,46per cent) are of very good quality with high potential, but require appropriate management. About half of the livestock and sheep. Only the lower areas have good conditions for farming; the dominant crops are potato, barley, rye and cabbage. Generally, agriculture is extensive and uneconomic. The entire mountain economy is considerable difficulty, particularly because of the economic policies of former Yugoslavia, the war, war-related damage and natural restrictions. This regions requires reconstruction and the development of suitable programs for the improvement of agriculture.
