Sažetak
This paper provides a review of recent theoretical and empirical papers in which the conceptualization of children and childhood in contemporaneity is discussed and exemplified using the concept of child participation within institutionalized early childhood context. The literature that exists on the topic offers contradictory definitions of children and childhood. On the one hand, within contemporary childhood theories, childhood is viewed as a valuable period in which children are active, competent and capable human beings. They also emphasize the importance of children’s perspectives on their own lives. On the other hand, there is a conceptualization of childhood oriented towards the future. According to this understanding, childhood is a transient period in which children are immature, vulnerable, incapable, incomplete human becomings who are to be guided towards the final outcome of becoming an adult, in which the perspective of adults is visible.
