Sažetak
Based upon a decade of tradition in educating medical students in sign language and deaf culture, the University of Rijeka Department of Social Sciences and Medical Humanities launched a new initiative, soliciting from the Government of the Republic of Croatia to establish a National Centre for Higher Education of the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing. Such a Centre would involve in standardising programmes and technical preconditions for the education of the deaf, enabling that particular group of population to better integrate into socitey, to improve its access to health care and labour market, and to have positive impact upon their mental health and society in general .
