Sažetak
Kondzilo is a pilgrimage site in northeastern Bosnia. It owes its existence to the miraculous image of Our Lady of the Assumption, which was first mentioned in 1779. Since then, many recorded the sagas about the origin of this painting. Each record is fixed in time in which it was written and thus can be subjected to the analysis to provide some information on the time and context of its creation. In this presentation I will try to analyze all available records about the painting of Our Lady from Kondzilo. On the basis of their textual and contextual analysis I will try to show the origin of this saga, and how the saga influenced the construction of this holy place, as well as the perception of pilgrims. This presentation will be based on the research conducted by anthropologist Glen Bowman who analyzed the narratives of pilgrims who have traveled for centuries to Jerusalem and the Holy Land, wrote books about their experiences and memories of their journeys. He came to the conclusion that the "outside world", which is described, was constructed within the narrative tradition (Bowman 1992: 152). The texts of the Holy Land, produced by the cultural elite and distributed throughout the Christian civilization had a significant impact on how people perceive the holy places and their importance (Bowman 1992: 150). The pilgrims` acconts were written with specific intentions - religious, political, commercial - in order to influence a specific audience. Bowman suggests that rather than trying to link any of the records of pilgrims with the empirical world, we must examine the records itself: how they are organized, what are their assumptions, what do they focus on, and what do they reject. (Bowman 1992: 153, 154). In my analysis, I will try to follow similar procedure.
