Sažetak
The main theme of this presentation are Mirila – places where people rest while transporting the deceased to the cemetery. These places appear along the boundaries of the former Ottoman Empire, Habsburg Monarchy and Venetian Republic. At these locations, the deceased is laid on the ground, with two stones above the head and at the feet, and after a brief prayer the funeral procession moves on to the cemetery. After the funeral Mirila become taboos and even sacred, and they are respected and feared of. Later on, passers-by pray, leave flowers and candles at Mirila. The author connects their origin with a migration in the area of their occurrence in 15th, 16th and 17th centuries and the arrival of the Vlach population from Bosnia. Purpose of the Mirila is associated with the beliefs of the soul and its return among the living on All Souls` Day. Mirila are borders between the world of the dead and the world of the living, places where soul leaves the body, and places where the soul will return to on All Souls` Day.
