Sažetak
Accidental spilling of approximately 30 m3 of oil in the high karst region in Slovenia resulted in periodic increased content of mineral oils and total fats in spring waters from the wide zone of the western Istria, Croatia. Ground water quality monitoring is primarily organized on all springs confirmed by tracer testing as being connected with sink holes close to the place of accident, as well as on those for which the sinkhole – spring connection was suspected. Specific occurrence of increased content of mineral oils and total fats related to particular hydrological conditions was recorded on all monitored springs. Interpretation of ground water quality data, regime of springs discharge and geological setting of monitoring area point to the fact that recharge areas of particular springs exceed greatly the earlier estimated on hydrologic budget basis. Observed differences mostly resulted from the multiple overlapping of recharge areas of particular springs, as well as from the watershed variability due to the change in water level. Consequently, the conceptual pattern of regional flow is significantly larger than the area with balanced ratio between the discharge on particular springs and the precipitation in their hinterland. Additionally, this confirms that the hydrological connection between sinkholes in Slovenian part of Ćićarija and springs in Croatian part of Istria is more complicated than previously assumed. These reefers to both complex ground water residence time relations, and to the regional ground water flow extension.
