Sažetak
Ochratoxin A (OTA) and citrinin (CTN) are secondary metabolites of moulds that can be found in cereals and other commodities all over the world. The mechanism of OTA and CTN toxicity is not fully understood, although the involvement of oxidative stress is suspected. Resveratrol is antioxidative compound naturally found in red wine. In our study the adult male Wistar rats were treated with OTA (0, 125, 250 ug/kg, daily for 21 days) with or without CTN (20 mg/kg for two days two last days of OTA treatment). Groups of animals treated with OTA with or without CTN were also treated with resveratrol (20 mg/kg for 21 days). 24 hours after the last treatment, samples of blood were collected and catalytic activities of antioxidant enzymes were measured spectrophotometrically. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (Cat) were measured in plasma and erythrocytes of treated animals and compared with control animals, while activity of glutathione peroxidise (GPx) was measured in whole blood. Activity of SOD was decreased in plasma of animals treated with higher dose of OTA (250 ug/kg), lower dose of OTA (125 ug/kg)+CTN, as well as with OTA (250 ug/kg)+CTN+RSV (p<0.05). Activity of SOD in erythrocytes was changed in neither treatment but when CTN was given alone. The activity of Cat in plasma did not change with any treatment, while in erythrocytes treatment with higher dose of OTA given alone as well as CTN alone caused changes in Cat activity. Activity of GPx did not change with any treatment. Although our results are not completely consistent with the mechanism of oxidative stress toxicity, the significant changes in some combinations indicate that oxidative stress could be involved in the combined toxicity of OTA and CTN.
