Sažetak
Introduction: Cardiovascular disease is a'n important cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with endstage renal disease (ESRD). Elevated total plasma homocystein (tHcy), that is probably due to im- paired renal Hcy metabolism.represent the commonest cardiovascular risk factor in patients with chronic renal failure. The aim of the follo- wing study was to determine and to compare tHcy levels in patients with ESRD before and after hemodialysis(HD). Method: EDTA plasma samples were collected from 21 patients (10"males and 11 females ) before and after HD.Plasma tHcy levels were measured by using a ful- ly automated fluorescence polarizatien immunoassay , IMx Homocystein Asšay (Abbott Laboratoties, reference interval: 5-15 mic-" romol/l). Additionaly urea and creatinine cocncentrations were mea¬sured in sera of ali patients before and after HD, as well as serum to¬tal cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations in the same group of patients before HD. ResultsrThe mean-determined' plasma tHcy level was 30.22 micromol/l before HD ranging from 16.09 to 38.74 micromol/l, and 17.94 micromol/l after HD ranging from 10.46 to 25.68 micromol/l. Conclusion: Elevated plasma"tHcy levels vvere.ob- served in ali patients with ESRD before HD! A significant 41% mean reduction of plasma tHcy levels was observed in patients after HD as compared to measured tHcy levels before HD.
