Sažetak
Children are exposed to various forms of suffering during a war, which lead to severe short term consequences for their psychological and physical health. War profoundly endangers children, whether by causing death or injury, by expelling them from their homes and making them refugees, causing them to live in refugee camps in poor and unhealthy conditions, by separating them from their families, or causing the loss of parents or those close to them. There are other secondary consequences of war, psychological disorders in children and adults, such as alcoholism, a lack of understanding and intolerance, even within families, all of which is reflected in the children. As these things were to be expected we drew up a new strategy of an active approach to child care. This included: 1. An orientation to a service for the population with the development of primary health care and home visitors. 2. Increased attention to health care for children, especially displaced persons and refugees. This was one of our top priorities. 3. In addition to programs for high risk groups, we developed programs of special activities aimed at children's programs to provide minimal nutritional and health care requirements for children in Croatia, programs of specific health care for children. The results of these programs show that many indicators of child health care(morbidity and the infant mortality rate) were relatively favorable in the context of a war, but the long-term consequences for the mental health of children is difficult to predict.
