Sažetak
Cultural capital, social capital, economic capital, field and institutional habitus (Bourdieu 1986, 1977 ; McDonaugh 1996) are worked with empirically in order to explore why some students in a Croatian higher education setting successfully progress through their first year of studies and others do not. The article draws on questionnaire data (642 students) and interview data (28 students) gathered in 2007, as well as Eurostudent data for Croatia gathered in 2010. Findings indicate that students who progress successfully are more likely to have a family history of HE experience, completed grammar schooling, a social network conducive to successful academic progress, the financial means required for studying, no professional responsibilities overriding academic requirements and express satisfaction with the course they have enrolled in. It is concluded that certain institutional practices, related to teaching and assessment, as well as a modest student support system, reinforce the position of the socially disadvantaged and privilege the socially advantaged who do not need opportunities to acquire capital in order to successfully progress since they have initial family capital to draw upon and. Data driven recommendations are provided on ways in which disadvantaged students can be supported.
