Sažetak
Commerce is one of the four economic branches crucial to the functioning of the tourist supply. The three remaining economic branches are: the catering industry, transport and travel agencies. We direct our attention towards the retail trade and its role in the functioning of tourism. We look into and analyze the similarities and differences in the retail development level of some transitional countries. We indicate the retail similarities and tendencies of developed European countries that were, are or will be significant generating tourist countries for some receptive tourist markets that are undergoing transition. The experience and achieved level of development in the retail structures of developed European countries represents the future state of retail structures in current transition countries at future higher economic levels of development.
