Sažetak
The retail trade is frequently an important , if not the most important, of industries, especially in highly developed countries. The control of quality information as a basic for decision-making is a prerequisite for successful retailing. Practice has confirmed that successful retailers have built their success by having quality information at their disposal and by applying their know-how in the creation and management of business policies. Information and the excellent management of information is becoming increasingly important. The environment of retailing companies is exceedingly turbulent, especially in developed market economies. Retailers suffer the affects from such environments, and having quality information enables them to adapt to challenges. Information is used to create and manage a more flexible business policy which can respond to such challenges. Each retailer has certain information at his disposal. Crucial information regards knowing the retail market. Retailers have to follow its development and need to have information at their disposal regarding the changes occuring in the retail environment. Knowing the retail market or its individual segments leads to the creation and management of adequate merchandise policies or its segments, such as assortment and price policies. Quality information is the basis for carrying out business decisions on the choice of adequate retail forms and retail technology. Common to all modern retail technologies is the attempt to either stop or slow down the growth in turnover or store costs. Many retailers have developed and applied the retailing information sustem-RIS. The paperlooks into the elements of the retailing information system and the potential sources for the gathering of information in the retail trade. The management of Croatian retailing companies should have at their disposal information on the trends following the modern retail trade of developed countries. The underlying reason is the increasing presence of foreign retailers on the Croatian retailing market.
