Sažetak
The recession in the Croatian economy has lasted since 1998. It is characterized by a decline of the GDP rate, increase in the annual rate of inflation, growing unemployment, high foreign trade balance deficit, low accumulation, and high non-liquidity with reference to the increasing amounts of outstanding enterprise debts. The efficiency of Croatian enterprises, or microeconomic efficiency, is at a very low level. It is obvious that the privatization carried out so far did not give the results expected. The mistakes in Croatian economic and overall policies led to an inadequate restructuring of the economy and to a model of economy based on trade development and import expansion, but not on production development and export expansion. This has caused numerous problems which need time and a high price to be solved. The paper analyses in short the state of the Croatian economy, afterwhich the basic characteristics and some problems of structuring adjustment, and some possible directions of action for problem solving.
