Sažetak
Based on the geografical distribution and changes over the time in the mortality of certain cancer sites of the digestive system (oral cavity, pharynx, oesophagus, stomach, large intestine and liver) in Croatia, the diet is assesed to be a major causative factor. On analysis, geografical maps of cummulative mortality rates for age groups 0-64 and 0-74 years in the period 1978-80 and 1988-9 showed stomachal cancer load has an even distribution except in the role Lika and Zadarska areas. The mortality of oesophagus cancer is higher in the areas of Hrvatskozagorska, Varždinska, Osiječka, Slavonskobrodska and Istria. While compared with other European countries, oral cavity cancer mortality in Croatia is similar to theirs, our stomachal cancer moratality rates closely resemble Hungarys and Polands, those for colorectal cancer beeing similar to Italy. Our liver cancer mortality is lower than the Italian and Greek. Other epidemiological investigators have been also shown Croatias north to carry a greater load not only of cancer, but also of chronic diseases. Diet can hypothesuized to be one of the major factors in this. Actually, the Mediterranian diet (high in vegetables and fruits, fish and olive oil and red wine) seems to carry a lower risk than northern diets laden with animal fat.
