Sažetak
In Croatia, like in many outher countries, female breast canacer is the most common cancer in women. Every fifth cancer affected woman here has a breast cancer. The number of new cases and deaths from this canacer site have been on a steady rise. Annually, over 1.400 (58/100 000)new cases are diagnosed, with more than 750 (31/100000)women dying. Noting the size and importance of the problem, the first 8 Croatian lady volunteers have completed a course, receiving their certificates from International Reach to Recovery Program . On the model of their cuntries , the Branch of Croatian Women Volunteers was funded within the Coratian Leage against Cancer. Our Reach to Recovery Program was strated in 1994 at the University Clinic for Tumors, Zagreb. Because of then war, under the Reach to Recovery Program concept the volunteers were taking on duty turns twice a week, wich included answering phone calls., in the afternoon hours at the University Clinic for Tumors on the League against Cancer premises. Throught conserving with and advising female patients, the Program was also run in another larger University Clinic in their hairdressers parlot wich supplied the female patients with cancer, breast cancer and other carcinomas with wigs. Group support to the women undergoing a breast operation is given by the bereast operated womens clubs. In Zagreb, they were established alredy in 1982. In 1996 and 1997 they were funded in Osjek, Rijeka, Požega, Split, Pula, Metković.A professional team made up a social workers , physiatrics, psyhoilogists and suregeons does the program planning, followup and evaluation. On average, the professional team and volunteers have monthly joint meetings conducted by program coordinator. Currently a popular brochure for female breast cancer patients is prepared. Through continous activoities the thus organized Center would raise patient awereness, provide them and their families with larger aid, improve the patients quality of life and reduce female berast cancer patient mortality.
