Sažetak
The authors examined the effects of war in Bosnia and Herzegovina on the occurence of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in women. The period of ten years was observed: 5 consecutive years (187-91) before the war and 5 consecutive years (1992-96) during the war. Residents in the region of Mostar (182000) who had not emigrated or immigrated in the region at war, who suffered from AMI and required admission to the regional hospital Mostar, were included into the study. There was significant increase in AMI during the war (482 cases) compared to the period before the war (365 cases) (p less then 0.05). In the period before the war 246 men and 119 women and during the war 267 men and 161 women were admitted to the hospital becouse of AMI. The comparsion of the number of women before the war and during the war by age groups showed that there was a significant increase of AMI cases in women in the age group 60-69 (p less then 0.01) during the war. The difference in other groups were not significant. Conclusion: During the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, among domicile population in the region of Mostar, the number of AMI case in women increased significantly in the age group 60-69 compared to the war period. This can probably be explained by the long term stress during the war.
