Sažetak
Compounding is one of the most productive word-formation processes in English language. As a result of compounding, new words are constantly formed ; words containing two or more roots. Due to the fact that they contain multiple roots, their composition is complex and their investigation challenging. Classification and analysis of compound words can be made on several levels: based on word class, headedness, orthography, semantics, syntactic relationship, morphological composition, etc. Analysis of compound words can convey important information about their formation, usage and relationships. Moreover, it is possible to investigate the origin of the roots and differentiate between native, borrowed, hybrid and neo-classical compounds. For the purpose of this thesis, compounds are going to be extracted from Cormac McCarthy's novel The Road and classified in terms of word class, headedness, orthographic treatment, syntactic relationship, morphological composition, semantic relationship, word origin and transparency. Such an integral approach conveys more information about compounds than analysis on a single level, as well as information about the author's style and its effect on usage of compounds and vice versa.
