Sažetak
Objective: The aims of this study were to examine the effects of ovariectomy and whether age and/or diabetes (DM) duration have effect on vascular relaxation to acetylcholine in age- matched healthy and DM non-ovariectomized (non- OVX) and ovariectomized (OVX) rats. Methods: Bilateral ovariectomy was performed and streptozotocin was used to induce diabetes mellitus in female Sprague-Dawley rat, divided into 8 groups: 12 weeks old (6 weeks DM) CONTROL, DM, OVX CONTROL, OVX DM and 16 weeks old (10 weeks DM) CONTROL, DM, OVX CONTROL, OVX DM. Thoracic aortic rings were used to test dose responses to acetylcholine (10- 9-10-5 M) after precontraction with noradrenaline. Results: While there was no significant difference in relaxation between both non-OVX 12 weeks old CONTROL and DM and 16 weeks old CONTROL and DM rats, vascular responsiveness was significantly reduced in both 12 weeks and 16 weeks old OVX DM rats compared to their age- matched CONTROLS. There was no difference in vascular response considering age and/or DM duration in both non-OVX and OVX rats. Conclusions: These results suggest that oestrogen may have protective effect on vascular relaxation in DM rats. Longer duration of DM seems not to have effect on vascular responsiveness in both non OVX and OVX rats.
