Sažetak
Environmental ethics is a possible link between bioethics and chemistry. The „Silent Spring“, a landmark work of Rachel Carson should be considered in this context. This year we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first edition of the book which has positioned a new, modern approach towards the environmental protection. This approach is based on the scientific evidence, on the experience and perceptions of local communities, while the moral responsibility of politicians, manufacturers, and scientists is presupposed. According to Carson, the protection of environment must accept scientific facts, but also includes the moral perspective. In her work the chemistry, biology and ethics meet each other. Each agrochemical procedure in the nature is coupled to moral questions. This type of ethics has been known as “environmental ethics”, whereas a number of university departments for the protection of the nature have been named as “environmental sciences”. Carson has set the standard for scientific responsibility: those scientist which fails to observe or ignores the facts, the warnings, or the questions, is scientifically illiterate or scientifically dishonest. By using her style, approach, and the insight she has advocated for a dialogue between the public, science, and the politics on the environmental issues, chemicals, or diseases. She has initiated interdisciplinary discussions and pluriperspective approach in which the experience of the hunter, the observations of the farmer, the precaution of the housewife, or the opinion of the scientist, each has its own values.
